Codex Desktop
Use account switching with Codex Desktop on Mac.
ChatGPT web has its own account switcher. Codex Desktop needs a separate workflow.
Short answer
Codex Desktop account switching
OpenAI documents account switching for ChatGPT web and says Codex Desktop does not support that switcher. On Mac, Codex Switcher provides a local menu bar workflow for selecting the Codex account you want to use.
Web and desktop use different controls
OpenAI's web account switcher can keep two ChatGPT accounts signed in within the same web session. That control does not appear in Codex Desktop. A browser account choice should not be treated as proof of the account active in the desktop Codex workflow.
Check the desktop account before starting work. Codex Switcher puts that check in the Mac menu bar and marks the selected account with a check mark.
Set up the desktop accounts you use
Add an account through Codex Switcher and complete the sign-in. Give it a name you will recognize under pressure. Add the next account and repeat the process.
Open the menu before a new task, select the required account, and return to Codex. Existing account access remains subject to OpenAI and any organization that manages the account.
- Use the desktop account state as the source for desktop work.
- Keep work and personal labels unambiguous.
- Re-authorize an account when its sign-in expires.
Know what switching preserves
Selecting another account changes the active account context. It does not merge projects, chats, billing, memory, or organization policy. Treat each account as a separate identity.
Save work before changing accounts. If a running task depends on the previous account, finish or stop that task before you switch. Start the next task after the menu shows the intended account.
Check current OpenAI guidance
Desktop behavior can change when OpenAI updates the app. The linked OpenAI account-switching article states the current support boundary and should take priority over old forum posts or screenshots.
Codex Switcher also depends on local Codex tools. Use the three-day trial to confirm that the current app version works with your Mac and the accounts you plan to add.
